MSW’s current elementary playground equipment was installed at the Stone Chapel campus in the mid-1990s and then moved to our current location when the campus was built in 2001. Commercial playgrounds typically last 15 to 20 years; through repairs and preventative maintenance, we have extended the structure for several years of play, but it is at the end of its lifecycle. It has served a generation of students – some of whom now have returned to MSW as staff members or parents!
The investment in playground equipment will serve students in the Lower Elementary and Upper Elementary classrooms, as well as After School Care and Summer Camp participants – now and perhaps for another generation. In addition, the new structure and playground surface will meet updated safety guidelines and be ADA accessible.
“This kind of activity (climbing, carrying, etc), which serves no external purpose, gives children the practice they need for coordinating their movements…all the child does is to obey the inner impulse.” - Dr. Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind
We appreciate your support of this once-in-a-generation effort to raise funds for the Elementary School playground. Outdoor play is an important part of the Montessori school day and critical to the physical, mental, and emotional development of children and adolescents.
Commercial playground equipment is expensive. Our goal is to raise $100,000 to cover the cost of removal and disposal of the old equipment, site preparation, and the purchase and installation of a large structure with a variety of play features.
By working together with Foundations; corporate and organizational sponsors; individual donations from alumni, current MSW families, and the extended MSW community; and fundraising activities, we can provide a safe, updated play structure that will serve the next generation of students.
As of mid-May 2022, we have raised almost $50,000.
